How do these shapes compare to other brands?
DC is 'similar' but not the same as a Les Paul Jnr tm or a PRS Santana tm
SC Is similar but not the same as a Les Paul. The neck join area is smoother.
VS is very close to a Stratocaster. We can shave the neck join area for smoother access
VT is very close to a Telecaster. We can shave the neck join area for smoother access
SX is the standard body shape used for Multiscale instruments. The 6 and 7 string bodies are the same shape. 8 string bodies are slightly larger. Bass SX bodies are slightly longer also.
SS is very close to a Jackson Soloist. It has a smooth neck join as standard.
METAL is a similar size to a Jackson Warrior or Charvel Star, but it is not the same shape

Alder -
Alder is great for bodies due to its lighter weight (about four pounds for a normal body) and its full sound. Its closed grain makes this wood easy to finish. Alder's natural color is a light tan with little or no distinct grain lines. We think it looks best with a solid color finish or maybe a deep transperant stain. The tone is balanced with equal doses of lows, mids and highs. Alder has been the mainstay for Fender bodies for many years and is definately a popular choice with our guitars too.

Tasmanian Blackwood -
A relative of the Hawaiian Koa family, this timber is set to be the new 'must have' tonewood. We are VERY big fans of the balance clean tones, and pretty grain. Very similar to Honduras Mahogany in tone, but without a lot of the muddiness inherant with Mahogany. A touch heavier, but nothing really to worry about unless you have a large body and a thick Maple top. Our most popular timber.

Queensland Maple -
Common alternative to Honduras Mahogany, but features a slightly brighter tone. Interlocking grain can be a little harder to work with. Looks great under a clear finish, and accepts stains well. Has has slightly pinkish hue to the grain. Sometimes available with figuring, but it is rare.

African Mahogany -
Common alternative to Honduras Mahogany, but features a slightly brighter tone. Interlocking grain can be a little harder to work with. Looks great under a clear finish, and accepts stains well. Tends to be heavier than true American Mahoganies.

Plantation Mahogany -
Whilst this timber is the same species as Honduras Mahogany, it is grown in a different climate in South East Asia. Due to this climate, it has different tonal qualities. We offer this timber as an option, but strongly recommend either genuine Honduras Mahogany (extra costs) or Tasmanian Blackwood (no cost) as alternatives. Often the grain can be soft, and not as strong as other timbers. Warm tonal spectrum.

Swamp Ash -
Very popular timber of a creamy colour. We try and source the light pieces, so most bodies are around 4 lbs. Very well rounded tone, with nice cleans and mid range and lots of highs. Great for all styles, but excells with blues, rock and metal.

Hard Ash -
Hard Ash is very hard, heavy and dense. A normal body will generally weigh 5 lbs. and up. It is a dense timber, and slightly brighter sounding. Great for heavy rock and distorted amps. Its color is very similar to Swamp Ash, but it also tends to have heartwood featuring brown colouring which can be classed as 'ugly' by some people. The grain pores are open and it takes a lot of finish to fill them, but this can be seen as a bonus for those that want to 'feel' the grain and have it show through with a thin finish.

Black Limba -
Same species as Korina, but with lovely grain lines are a favourite for many of our clients. We only get limited quantites of this timber, but they are always very nice looking pieces. Similar to Mahogany in tone, but with a nicer more pronounced mid section. Looks fantastic under clear lacquer.

Korina -
Korina is the name 'invented' by Gibson so that none of their competitors knew what they were using. It's real name is Limba, and it comes from Africa. See above for more.

Honduras Mahogany -
Currently CITES listed (www.cites.org) and therefore illegal to import into Australia as a raw material. We got lucky, and scored all remaining available one and two piece body stock from the larger timber merchants throughout Australia. What we have is limited, but we do have enought to keep us going for some time now. Due to its exclusivity, this timber commands a higher price. We STRONGLY recommend Tasmanian Blackwood as not only an alternative, but a definate 'upgrade'. Mahogany has promonent warm tone, but can be a little muddy at times if combined with the wrong pickups.

Some timbers are available in single piece bodies. Would you prefer a one piece body?

How should the rear look?

Do you require any chambering?

Chambering adds mid range, and removes weight. Too much chambering can promote feedback under gigging volumes.

If you require chambers, how about an F-Hole?

F-holes promotes a touch more feedback, and increases acoustic volumes.

Would you like a timber top? (Flat tops/Flat tops with forearm carve only)

Adding a top to the guitar will change the tone. Maples, Cocobolo, and Bubinga will add some brightness to all body timbers. Wenge is very well rounded, similar in tone to Alder. Rosewood will warm up a bright guitar.

Which type of neck joint would you like?
Note: If you have chosen to have a top on the body, AND want that top to also go over the neck through section, please choose the 'Through neck with additional top' option

What is your preferred neck construction?

Scarf jointing is where the headstock is glued onto the main neck shaft, as per Jackson, Ibanez, BC Rich and many many other brands. Laminated necks tend to withstand movement due to humidity a little more.

Which timber would you like for the neck?

Maple -
Maple is THE standard for electric guitar necks throughout the world, and for good reason. It has a nice well rounded bright tone and excellent sustain.

Tasmanian Blackwood -

Wenge -
Excellent strength and fantastic reasonant quality. Nice mid range with a well balanced tone. Requires no lacquer and feels great when oiled only. Chocolate brown and black stripes ensure Wenge always looks great.

Walnut -
Nice warmth with a slight mid range hump. Mid brown coloured, reasonable weight, and strong enough for ultra thin necks.

Black Limba -
Same species as Korina, but with lovely grain lines are a favourite for many of our clients. We only get limited quantites of this timber, but they are always very nice looking pieces. Similar to Mahogany in tone, but with a nicer more pronounced mid section. Looks fantastic under clear lacquer.

Which scale length would you like?

The longer the scale length, the more sustain and tighter the sound will be. All things equal, a longer scale length with thinner strings sounds 'bigger' than a shorter scale length with thicker strings. The Multiscale designs are the ultimate combination, and are highly recommended.

Fretboard Radius?

Tighter radius (smaller number) generally equals easier chord work. Flatter radius (larger number) gives the ability to bend further without choking each note out. The action (string height) required for chord work is the same no matter what the fretboard radius is. However, tighter radius fretboards generally require a slightly higher action if you wish to do larger bends.

Fretboard choice does effect the tone of the instrument, but it is subtle. From brightest to warmest: Ebony (black) , Macassar Ebony, Maple, Cocobolo, Wenge, Brazilian Rosewood, Indian Rosewood

Stainless Steel lasts around three times longer than standard Nickel Silver wire, and is ever so slightly brighter sounding.
